Professor Carla Davis Professor Carla DavisCarla Davis was an exceptional teacher, scholar, advisor, and sociologist who inspired many of her students to excel and work toward social justice. She died in 2021.

“She challenged sociology students to be critical thinkers and to strive to reach the intellectual heights she knew they were capable of,” President-elect Eric Boynton and Professor of Religious Studies and Critical Identity Studies Natalie Gummer wrote in an email announcing the award. “Alumni remark that they still think of her courses every day, even years after taking them.”

The class of 2023 also honored Davis by designating their senior class gift in her honor, a tree that will be planted outside of Campbell Hall, where she had a campus office.
